Top EHR Industry Trends to Watch in 2025

In 2016, a paper in the Yearbook of Medical Informatics —  Electronic Health Records: Then, Now, and in the Future — noted that although, over the previous 25 years, computer hardware had become “more affordable, powerful, and compact,” many of the early expectations for the EHR had still not been realized. The article predicted, however, that ongoing advances would leverage “health, social, economic, behavioral, and environmental data to communicate, interpret, and act intelligently upon complex healthcare information to foster precision medicine and a learning health system.”

That prediction appears to be on target. The ever-evolving healthcare landscape continues to transform patient care. EHR industry trends, including the emergence of cloud-based EHRs, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), interoperability solutions, tools to improve access to care, and patient engagement apps, have all gained momentum. In 2025, those trends are set to evolve even more rapidly, ushering in an entirely new era of healthcare.

AI Taking Center Stage

AI-driven solutions are taking over healthcare systems. From automating routine workflows to providing clinical insights to support decision making, the integration of these solutions is making healthcare more efficient and personalized.

In 2023, we, at eClinicalWorks, the first AI-driven EHR, introduced a series of AI integrations to assist healthcare professionals which includes AI Assistant, Image AI for fax inbox, AI for Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and more. Last year, we also introduced AI for Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) to streamline billing workflows.

Compassionate Patient Care

AI medical scribes such as Sunoh.ai are making it possible to summarize patient-provider conversations into structured clinical documentation. That allows healthcare professionals to better focus on providing compassionate, “in-the-moment” care to their patients rather than focusing on a computer screen and keyboard.

A Superior Patient Experience

By ensuring patients receive the health information they need when they need it, AI contact center solutions such as healow Genie are set to revolutionize patient engagement. Creating a superior patient experience requires technology that can offer patients 24/7 access to vital health information, with zero waiting time, and do so through whatever method they prefer, whether a phone call, text, chat, or chatbot.

Diversified Solutions

To serve diverse healthcare communities, it is critical to innovate healthcare solutions that can help tackle challenges like language barriers. AI-powered tools are being developed with multilingual feature capable of understanding different languages and handling a variety of dialects and accents.

Expansion of Telehealth

The global COVID-19 pandemic promoted more widespread use of telehealth and helped spur advances in telehealth technologies. Integrating the EHR with telehealth platforms such as healow TeleVisits™ will continue to expand patients’ access to care. Streamlining the provision of remote patient care services, especially for behavioral health providers and their patients, fosters a more seamless virtual healthcare experience.

Interoperability at Peak

Interoperability is a cornerstone of value-based care (VBC), allowing healthcare providers to collaborate with one another to improve patient outcomes. PRISMA is a leading interoperability solution, designed to give providers access to a wealth of patient information to facilitate more efficient and effective clinical care. With the power of AI Assistant, PRISMA summarizes relevant patient information in ways that help providers formulate care plans.

Popularity of Cloud EHRs

The flexibility and security of cloud technology make it an ideal platform for the future of EHR systems. Transitioning to a cloud-based platform allows for real-time updates, scalability, cost savings, and enhanced security measures all vital features in healthcare.

In 2022, with a goal to digitalize our EHR, eClinicalWorks moved to becoming a Cloud based EHR. The cloud intelligence is transforming the delivery of healthcare as it is easy to access, quick to update with unlimited storage allowing our business to scale up, and most importantly, it is secure.

2025 in a Nutshell

These trends highlight the industry’s focus on improving interoperability, harnessing the power of emerging technologies, and prioritizing patient-centric care to redefine healthcare delivery. Navigating this dynamic environment may seem daunting, but it is an exciting time in healthcare industry, and we’re eager to see how these changes will shape the future.
