AI-driven healthcare technologies are fostering smarter patient care
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a futuristic concept, but is becoming an integral part of modern healthcare. It is a dynamic, active player transforming healthcare.
A 2020 report published by McKinsey, “Transforming healthcare with AI: The impact on the workforce and organizations,” notes AI’s potential to transform healthcare delivery and research published by the Mayo Clinic, Transforming Health Care With Artificial Intelligence: Redefining Medical Documentation, discusses the role of AI in medical documentation and its potential to reduce physician burnout and improve patient care.
With its ability to work silently in the background, AI is weaving a new narrative in healthcare, driving transformative changes and making the ‘impossible’ a part of our daily reality.
Last year, eClinicalWorks integrated a series of cutting-edge AI technologies into V12, the latest version of our core EHR. These included:
- Sunoh.ai medical scribe, which turns patient-provider conversations into clinical documentation
- AI Assistant to streamline practice workflows
- Image AI to simplify fax inbox managementM
- Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and automated playlists
- The healow AI-powered no-show prediction model
This integration of AI into the EHR was welcomed by many existing eClinicalWorks users, including MedPeds, Pinnacle Family Care, Urban Health Plan, Brownfield Regional Medical Center, and St. Croix Regional Family Health Center.
Let’s look how the efficiencies achieved with the use of AI have helped these healthcare practices improve patient care.
Sunoh.ai medical scribe
MedPeds, a primary care practice, adopted Sunoh.ai, the AI medical scribe solution to enhance clinical documentation during in-person and telehealth appointments. This, combined with healow TeleVisits, enabled faster and more efficient clinical documentation.
“There is such a magic to the whole process by which I can really communicate in such a facile way with the Spanish-speaking patient in a written format. That is just a delight. It really is.”
– Seth Eaton, M.D., MedPeds LLC
Several providers using Sunoh.ai claim that it helps them save three to four hours of documentation time daily. That time saved on clinical documentation allows providers to better focus on patient care. It helps strengthen patient engagement, improves each patient’s care experience, and means providers have greater satisfaction in their work, lower risks of burnout, and better work-life balance.
In some cases, providers have chosen to use those additional hours to see more patients, thus expanding access to healthcare services.
“The cost of Sunoh is just a small percentage of what I was writing off. It’s going to just become part of our life.”
– Michael Tackett, Brownfield Regional Medical Center
AI medical scribe technology such as Sunoh is not just cost-efficient, it is cost-effective. The technology is easy to adopt, doesn’t require extensive training, and is easy to implement and use. It can handle documentation of visits in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, handles accents and dialects, and accurately transcribes medical terminology. The result? Accurate and higher quality draft notes for providers of all specialties.
AI Assistant for PRISMA
The eClinicalWorks interoperability solution, PRISMA, unites patient records from the eClinicalWorks EHR with those from external sources, including small clinics and large hospital systems, regardless of the EHR they may be using.
AI Assistant for PRISMA summarizes hundreds of pages of dense, complex records to highlight the most relevant information to support clinical decision-making, saving time and allowing providers to see more patients.
“PRISMA searches the entirety of the patient records. If the patient visits Hospital A, it can also bring up information from Hospital B and C that the provider may not known about. AI brings them all up for comparison. That’s very helpful, because it provides a total picture, and shows me the entirety of care.”
– John M. Ray. Jr., Pinnacle Family Care
healow AI-Powered No-Show Prediction Model
Missed appointments, last-minute cancelations, and reschedules causes healthcare practices to lose revenue. They also affect access to care and the continuity of care. By anticipating which slots on a practice’s schedule are likely to become open, the healow AI-Powered No-Show Prediction Model helps practices increase their show rates and keep schedules full. Practices can use the model to develop strategies to reach out to patients on ASAP and wait lists, or accommodate patients who may call with last-minute requests to be seen by a physician.
“The healow AI-Powered No-Show Prediction Model categorizes the patient population into three groups, either no-show or low probability, moderate or high-risk of not showing up. So, we focus partially on moderate and primarily on high-risk no-show patients.”
– Alison Connelly-Flores, Urban Health Plan
