Children’s National Medical Center Selects eClinicalWorks for Children’s IQ Network
Top Pediatric Hospital Using eClinicalWorks to Improve Quality of Healthcare in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia Area; eEHX Connecting Practices to Create Community Record
Westborough, Mass.—January 5, 2009—eClinicalWorks®, a market leader in ambulatory clinical systems, today announced that Children’s National Medical Center of Washington D.C., one of the nation’s top-ranked pediatric hospitals by U.S. News & World Report, has selected eClinicalWorks unified electronic medical record (EMR) and practice management (PM) software for its Children’s IQ NetworkSM. Children’s IQ Network is dedicated to improving connectivity, care and outcomes for children—and will be the first of its kind in the Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia region. Community pediatricians will be connected to Children’s National Medical Center through their eClinicalWorks EMR. Children’s IQ Network will use eClinicalWorks Electronic Health eXchange (eEHX®) community health record to additionally connect public schools, foster care program and mobile medical vans as well as state immunizations registries, commercial labs and other regional health care providers.
“Most pediatricians in our region have not yet taken advantage of an office-based electronic medical record. We’ve developed the Children’s IQ Network – the first such network in our area that focuses on interconnecting the healthcare of children,” said Dr. Brian Jacobs, Vice President and Chief Medical Information Officer at Children’s National Medical Center. “After reviewing systems for nearly two years, we selected eClinicalWorks because of its focus on a high quality product for children, the success they have achieved in community settings and the commitment shown to this project.”
Children’s IQ Network will connect Children’s National’s employed pediatricians in its seven D.C. primary care clinics, its D.C. foster care program, and mobile medical vans through eClinicalWorks software, and will be open for additional area pediatricians to join. There will be interfaces with Children’s inpatient Cerner system, commercial laboratory systems, the Sage Intergy EMR in practices owned by Children’s National and HealthMaster, the EMR to be used by 172 schools in the District of Columbia. E-prescribing and vaccine registry information for Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia will be available in the eClinicalWorks system. All of this will create a Continuity of Care Record (CCR) for the children of the greater Washington, D.C., area to track and analyze the care that is being provided and explore opportunities for improved care delivery. Network practices will also have access to eClinicalWorks Enterprise Business Optimizer (eBO) for enhanced reporting capabilities.
Mark Weissman, M.D., Medical Director, Children’s National Health Network at Children’s National, added: “This ambitious network will connect and improve the quality of care delivered to the children in this region. It also will help us identify and better understand clinical or administrative issues that may need improvement.”
“Using an electronic health record will make our practice more efficient,” said Tom Sullivan, MD at ALL Pediatrics – the first community practice to join the project. “The Children’s IQ Network will help us maintain more complete health records and have better access to all of the information that pertains to our patients – whether it is from the school nurse or a trip to the hospital – so we can make the most informed decisions for the children that we treat.”
Pediatricians that are part of the Children’s IQ Network will implement eClinicalWorks unified EMR/PM system using a Software as a Service (SaaS) model so members are able to access the system via the Internet. The system will streamline clinical processes between practice locations and promote patient safety while reducing costs. Providers will also have access to eBO, which uses meta-data to give the practice more flexibility through the creation of customized reports and by performing clinical and financial analysis. eEHX will create a community record that will enable physicians to have access to patients’ vital health information and allow physicians to exchange data more effectively.
“Children’s National is undertaking a wide-ranging project that will greatly benefit the care received in the greater Washington, D.C., area,” said Girish Kumar Navani, CEO and co-founder of eClinicalWorks. “We are proud to be chosen by one of the nation’s top pediatric hospitals and excited to be an integral part of this groundbreaking physician’s network.”
