National Doctors’ Day is not just a date; it’s a heartfelt recognition of the dedication, compassion, and relentless efforts of doctors worldwide. At eClinicalWorks, we are committed to fostering a supportive environment for healthcare professionals. By providing innovative solutions and dedicated support, we strive to make a meaningful impact on the healthcare landscape.
As we celebrate this special day, let’s ensure that our appreciation extends beyond just one day and becomes a continuous effort to support and honor the medical community.
A Glimpse into History
The origins of National Doctors’ Day take us back to the mid-19th century. In 1841, a young Dr. Crawford Williamson Long made an intriguing observation after inhaling nitrous oxide — better known as laughing gas — at a party. He noticed that even if you tripped and fell, instead of crying out in pain, you’d be laughing.
This observation led to a groundbreaking application: On March 30, 1842, Dr. Long used ether as an anesthetic during surgery, allowing his patient, James Venable, to undergo a painless cyst removal. This marked the advent of anesthesia, revolutionizing medical practice forever.
Fast forward to 1933. Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, wanted to honor physicians like her husband. She chose March 30 to commemorate Dr. Long’s contribution to medicine. On this day, flowers were placed on Dr. Long’s grave and those of other honored physicians throughout Georgia. Cards expressing gratitude and toasts at dinners became part of the tradition, a practice that continues today.
In October 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed Public Law 101-473, officially recognizing National Doctors’ Day as a holiday.
The Heart of Healthcare

National Doctors’ Day is our opportunity to acknowledge and thank them for their invaluable contributions.
