The leading cause of death for adults across the United States – heart disease. To shine a spotlight on this issue, February has been designated American Heart Month. This is our 60th year of setting aside this month to focus on understanding the importance of cardiovascular health and what we can do to maintain it. Adopting a healthful diet and regular physical exercise reduces your chance of contracting heart disease and other life-threatening diseases.
What is American Heart Month?
In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Proclamation 3556, which designated American Heart Month as an annual federal event.
There are a lot of things you can do to maintain a healthy heart, but many people don’t understand the significance of it. American Heart Month was enacted to raise awareness of how important it is to keep up your cardiovascular health.
Heart disease is preventable. Here are some things you can put at the top of your New Year’s Resolutions list to maintain your cardiovascular health and increase your chances of protecting your heart:
- Healthy diet
- Exercise
- Regular check-ups with your doctor
