South Point Family Practice Utilizes eClinicalWorks Solution to Transform Operations, Digitize Patient Records and Streamline Day-to-Day Tasks to Enhance Patient Care

Based in Belmont, North Carolina, South Point Family Practice consists of a group of seven physicians and four physician assistants who work out of two separate offices and offer patients the full spectrum of primary care, including hospital care, with same-day appointments as well as 24-hour emergency coverage. The practice, which has been in service for almost 25 years, treats approximately 40,000 patients and in recent years experienced increasing difficulty in managing the burgeoning paper work, especially phone messages and medication and refill requests within each respective office and between the two offices.

The practice sought a coordinated medical records system and clinical records system to solve its challenges. By implementing eClinicalWorks, South Point Family Practice found an electronic system that streamlined and centralized its entire operation, from front-office to back-office, giving practitioners instant access to a wealth of vital patient information and the ability to deliver superior care, all while generating significant time savings.

“As a growing family practice, we began to find it increasingly difficult to effectively manage the massive amount of patient information and requests that come with having a large patient-base. HIPPA mandates presented another huge concern,” said Dr. David Rinehart.

“The eClinicalWorks technologies are proven and affordable solutions which, since deployment, have completely transformed our practice messaging and paperwork, eliminating great inefficiencies in favor of a streamlined organization with critical patient information just clicks away from any workstation. With this critical technology in place, we are able to treat all of our patients with the level of care they demand.”

Since going live, South Point’s operations have been transformed, a process that continues to progress as more information is inputted into the system. First off, stacks of charts have been eliminated and as a result, employees no longer search throughout the office for patient information. Instead, all necessary employees enjoy instant access to all patient information, which is more accurate, in-depth and available than ever before. Additionally, chart creation time has been reduced to a couple of minutes, saving time and money, while the management of all phone calls and messages has greatly improved.

Furthermore, transcription staff time saving has been reduced by 90 percent, a savings of over $100,000 a year for the practice, while the prescription writing process is vastly improved, as a refill that previously needed to be written out by hand now can be executed with only a few clicks of the mouse. In a practice where at least 300 prescriptions are faxed to pharmacies each day, it is a hugely advantageous system. With the solution in place, doctors and physician assistants even have the ability to access all patient data from home, over a secure connection, making after-hours calls easier and clinical decisions far more accurate.

“I believe eClinicalWorks provides the very best value available of the electronic records and patient management systems I have seen,” says Rinehart. “In the last twenty months, we also have a happier, quieter office, one that has entered the 21st century of technology in healthcare.”
